Triple Crown Winners

Paul A. Hines Old Judge reprint. In 1878 Hines hit .358, 4 HR, 50 RBI for the NL Providence Grays.
The Triple Crown is so rare it has only been accomplished 17 times (by 15 players) in all of MLB history, most recently in 2012, by Miguel Cabrera. I try to collect the card for each winner that best acknowledges this significant achievement. I can't find many (affordable) options for older players. So I have to rely on the Conlon Collection cards for nearly an entire sheet. Thankfully, there is the Conlon Collection.

2014 Upper Deck Goodwin Champions. In 1887 O'Neill hit .435, 14 HR, 123 RBI for the American Association St. Louis Browns.
1992 The Sporting News Conlon Collection. In 1894 Duffy hit 440, 18 HR, 145 RBI for the NL Boston Beaneaters. There is doubt over whether Hugh Duffy's 1894 RBI totals were the highest.

1992 The Sporting News Conlon Collection. In 1902 Lajoie hit .426, 14 HR, 125 RBI for the AL Philadelphia Athletics.

1992 The Sporting News Conlon Collection. In 1909 Cobb hit. 377, 9 HR, 107 RBI for the AL Detroit Tigers.

1992 The Sporting News Conlon Collection. In 1912 Zimmerman hit .372, 14 HR, 104 RBI for the NL Chicago Cubs. He was later permanently banned from baseball by Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis "based on a long-term pattern of corruption."

1992 The Sporting News Conlon Collection. In 1922 Hornsby hit .401, 42 HR, 152 RBI for the NL St. Louis Cardinals.

1992 The Sporting News Conlon Collection. A two-time winner, in 1925 Hornsby hit.403, 39 HR, 143 RBI for the NL St. Louis Cardinals.

1992 The Sporting News Conlon Collection. In 1933 Foxx hit .356, 48 HR, 163 RBI for the AL Philadelphia Athletics.

2012 Panini National Treasures 04/99. Klein was the Triple Crown Winner in the NL in 1933 after hitting .368, 28 HR, 120 RBI for the NL Philadelphia Phillies.
2010 Topps Peak Performance. In 1934 Gehrig hit .363, 49 HR, 166 RB for the AL New York Yankees. Gotta love this mans smile!

Miller Press Co. In 1937 Medwick hit .374, 31 HR, 154 RBI for the NL St. Louis Cardinals. Looks like we may have an error card here. Hmmm.

1959 Fleer. In 1942 Williams hit  .356, 36 HR, 137 RBI for the AL Boston Red Sox.

1959 Fleer. Along with Hornsby, Williams is the other two-time Triple Crown Winner. In 1947 Williams hit .343, 32 HR, 114 RBI for the AL Boston Red Sox.

2003 Upper Deck 1827/1956. In 1956 Mantle hit .353, 52 HR, 130 RBI for the AL New York Yankees.

1992 Score. In 1966 Robinson hit .316, 49 HR, 122 RBI for the AL Baltimore Orioles the first year after being dealt away from the Reds (Grrr).

1992 Score. The very next year after Robinson's feat, 1967, Yaz hit  .326, 44 HR, 121 RBI for the AL Boston Red Sox.

2013 Panini Prism. After a 46-year Triple Crown drought, Cabrera hit .330, 44 HR, 139 RBI for the AL Detroit Tigers to resurrect the award.

These winners have put up some monster stats!

As a team, the Cardinals have the most Triple Crown Winners with four (including Tip O'Neil with the Cardinals predecessor Browns team). Followed by the Red Sox and Phillies with three each (Duffy with the Boston Beaneaters eventually became the Braves organization). Eleven of the eligible winners are in the HoF.

LMK with the if you have any suggestions for other cards that may depict this rare and awesome feat better than the ones I've shown.

Thanks for visiting!

Ballplayers Turned Announcers, Actors, Writers, Etc.

We all know of ballplayers that become announcers, actors, or writers. This post shows cards for a few notable examples, as well as a few other players with occupations that you may not be aware of. Announcers 1952 Topps card #227. Not only was Joe Garagiola a catcher for parts of nine season with four clubs, but he was also an announcer, writer, and host of numerous television shows. Joe was honored by the Baseball Hall of Fame with the Ford C. Frick Award for outstanding broadcasting accomplishments and he was named as the 2014 recipient of the Buck O'Neil Lifetime Achievement Award, presented once every three years by the Baseball Hall of Fame for positive contributions to Major League Baseball.     1965 Topps card #65. Tony Kubek played for the Yankees for nine seasons, winning the 1957 Rookie of the Year award and selected to three All-Star games. Kubek played in six World Series in the late 1950s and early 1960s, starting in 37 World Series games. U...

Welcome to my first post!

Original, well-loved, cards from my youth. Rose: "I'd walk through hell in a gasoline suit to play baseball." My Story: I started collecting sports cards back in 1970 when I was about 9-yrs old. If I recall correctly, the first packs I opened in 70 and 71 contained a card of Pete Rose. Rose became my favorite player because of his hustle and desire to win, and he was one of the main cogs of the Cincinnati Reds Big Red Machine, my favorite team. (I still consider Rose to be one of the best players ever, but I have no respect for what he has done outside of the white lines) I collected a lot of cards up until mid 1975 which is when my interests changed, but I never got rid of those cards (nor were they thrown away by mom or dad, thankfully). I got back into collecting, on and off, from the mid 80's up to this day, but only baseball cards. Over the years, I realized I had a fairly decent collection of player cards from those days and started to organize my co...

Retired Numbers - Oakland Athletics

Continuing with my posts on retired numbers, below are card scans of former MLBers whose numbers have been retired by the Oakland Athletics to forever be revered. No. 9 Reggie Jackson 2013 Topps Commemorative Patch Card #RCP-7 No. 24 Rickey Henderson 1991 Bowman #692. There are so many great, great Henderson cards that I had a hard time picking out just one for this post. Well the '91 Bowman really stood out to me. No. 27 Catfish Hunter 1976 Laughlin #7. As noted here , Hunter is one of only 6 players ever that went directly from HIGH SCHOOL to the major leagues and NEVER played in the minor leagues. No. 34 Rollie Fingers 1976 Hostess #104. No. 42     Jackie Robinson 1980-1987 SSPC HoF #89. I love how Oakland's green and gold colors stand out in the border of this card. No. 43 Dennis Eckersley 2014 Panini HoF Induction Class of 2004 Autograph #78. Who do you think will be the next former Oakland A to have their uniform number to be retired? Vida Blue? Dave Ste...
