Before the 1995 season, Fernández signed a two-year contract with the New York Yankees. It was because of an injury early in the 1996 season to Fernández that Derek Jeter became the Yankees regular shortstop.

In his 17 seasons, Fernandez played for the Blue Jays (12 years), Padres (2), Mets (1), Indians (1), Reds (1), Yankees (1), and the Brewers (1). In those years, he was a 5 time All Star and 4 time Gold Glove winner.
He batted over .300 four times, led the major leagues with 17 triples in 1990, collected 30 doubles six times, and 20 stolen bases seven times. He also led American League shortstops in assists three times, and in putouts and fielding average twice each.
Sadly, Fernandez passed away in February of this year at the all too young are of 57.
Stay safe out there,
CinciCuse Bill
Nice Fernandez collection. He was definitely underrated compared to Ripken and Larkin. It's nice to see so many bloggers appreciate his career.
ReplyDeleteSweet collection. Love that 1993 Topps card of his.
ReplyDeleteTony's 98 Topps card is in my Sunset Card Collection.
